How Long Does Vinyl Flooring South Africa Need to Sit Before Installing?

The answer is 24 to 48 hours — but the more important question is why. Skipping acclimation is one of the most common installation mistakes made with vinyl floor products across South Africa — and the consequences show up weeks or months after installation when it is too late and too expensive to fix easily.

Understanding what acclimation does, why South Africa's specific climate makes it particularly important, and how to do it correctly takes five minutes. Getting it wrong can mean lifting and relaying an entire floor.

At Amari Trading, we supply vinyl flooring across Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban for commercial, healthcare, industrial, and residential applications throughout South Africa.

What Is Acclimation and Why Does It Matter?

Acclimation is the process of allowing vinyl flooring south africa to adjust to the temperature and humidity conditions of the room it will be installed in — before installation begins.

Vinyl is a thermoplastic material. It expands slightly in warmth and contracts slightly in cooler conditions. Furthermore, it responds to changes in ambient humidity. When vinyl flooring roll or vinyl floor tiles are stored in a warehouse, transported in a truck, or kept in a cool storeroom — they are at a different temperature and humidity to the room they will eventually be installed in.

If you install a vinyl floor before it has adjusted to the room's conditions, the material continues to expand or contract after installation. Consequently, this post-installation movement causes gaps to open between planks or tiles, edges to lift, seams to buckle, and adhesive bonds to fail. The floor looks wrong and performs poorly — not because the product is faulty, but because the installation skipped a critical step.

How South Africa's Climate Makes Acclimation More Important

South Africa's climate creates specific acclimation challenges that installers in milder markets do not face to the same degree.

Temperature extremes — Gauteng's highveld climate creates significant temperature variation between seasons. A vinyl floor installed in a cool Johannesburg winter without adequate acclimation will expand noticeably as summer temperatures rise. Moreover, the thermal cycling between seasons creates repeated expansion and contraction cycles that stress any flooring solutions that was not correctly acclimated at installation.

Humidity variation — KwaZulu-Natal's coastal humidity is significantly higher than Gauteng's dry highveld. Vinyl flooring transported from a dry inland warehouse to a humid coastal installation site in Durban or the surrounding KwaZulu-Natal coast needs time to adjust to the higher ambient humidity before installation. Additionally, the Western Cape's seasonal humidity variation — wet winters, dry summers — creates similar challenges.

Temperature differentials between storage and installation — in South Africa's warm climate, delivery vehicles and storage facilities can reach significantly higher temperatures than air-conditioned commercial interiors. A vinyl flooring roll delivered in a hot truck and installed immediately in a cool air-conditioned space has not had time to stabilise at the room's temperature. Consequently, it will contract after installation as it cools to the room's equilibrium temperature.

The Correct Acclimation Process for Vinyl Flooring in South Africa

Step 1 — Bring the Flooring Into the Installation Room

Remove the vinyl flooring from the delivery vehicle or storage area and bring it into the room where it will be installed. Do not leave it in a garage, corridor, or adjacent space with different temperature or humidity conditions — it needs to be in the actual installation room.

Step 2 — Allow 24 to 48 Hours

Leave the material in the room for a minimum of 24 hours. Furthermore, 48 hours is preferable in South African installations where the temperature or humidity differential between storage and installation conditions is significant — particularly in KwaZulu-Natal's humid coastal environment or during the transition between seasons.

During this period, the room should be at its normal operating temperature and humidity. Do not acclimatise vinyl flooring in a room that is unheated in winter and then heat it after installation — the floor will contract after installation as the room returns to its normal condition.

Step 3 — Check Subfloor Conditions Before Installing

While the flooring acclimatises, use this time to prepare the subfloor correctly. The subfloor must be:

  • Clean — free of dust, adhesive residue, and debris
  • Dry — concrete subfloors must have a moisture content within the flooring manufacturer's specified limits
  • Flat — any high spots or dips greater than 3mm over a 1.8 metre span need levelling before installation
  • Structurally sound — loose, hollow, or damaged sections need repair

Additionally, check the subfloor temperature. In South Africa's winter months — particularly in Gauteng — concrete subfloors in unheated commercial spaces can be significantly colder than the ambient air temperature. Cold subfloors affect adhesive performance and vinyl flexibility during installation.

Step 4 — Install at Room Temperature

Install the vinyl floor while the room is at its normal operating temperature. Do not install in extreme heat or cold — South Africa's summer temperatures in Gauteng and the Northern Cape can make vinyl flooring too flexible for accurate cutting and positioning, while winter cold can make the material stiffer than its normal specification.

What Happens If You Skip Acclimation

The consequences of skipping acclimation in South African installations are predictable — and consistently expensive to fix.

Gap formation — vinyl floor planks or tiles that were installed contracted (in cold or low-humidity conditions) expand after installation as the room temperature rises. Gaps open between units. In luxury vinyl plank products with click-lock joints, gap formation can cause the lock to disengage entirely, creating visible movement between planks.

Buckling and peaking — vinyl flooring installed expanded (in warm or high-humidity conditions) contracts after installation. The material has nowhere to go and buckles upward at seams and joins. Consequently, a floor that looked flat at installation develops ridges and peaks within days or weeks.

Adhesive failure — in glue-down vinyl floor installations, post-installation movement caused by temperature or humidity change stresses the adhesive bond. The adhesive is designed for a stable, acclimatised substrate — not for a substrate that is actively moving. Edge lifting and delamination from the subfloor follow.

Acclimation for Different Vinyl Flooring Types

Vinyl Flooring Roll

Vinyl flooring roll products should be stored upright or flat — not bent or curved — during acclimation. Bending creates stress in the material that causes it to curl at the edges after installation. Furthermore, roll products should be unrolled and allowed to relax flat for at least 24 hours before cutting and installation begins.

Vinyl Floor Tiles and Planks

Individual vinyl floor tiles and planks should be removed from their boxes and laid flat in the installation room during acclimation. Leaving them stacked in boxes reduces air circulation around the material and extends the time needed to reach thermal equilibrium with the room.

Heavy Commercial Vinyl Flooring Roll

Thicker commercial vinyl flooring roll products — used in heavy duty, hospital, and school flooring applications — have greater thermal mass than thinner residential grades. Consequently, they require the full 48-hour acclimation period rather than the minimum 24 hours to reach equilibrium throughout the full thickness of the material.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about our company.

Minimum 24 hours in the installation room at normal operating temperature and humidity. Furthermore, 48 hours is recommended for South African installations where temperature or humidity differentials between storage and installation conditions are significant — particularly in coastal KwaZulu-Natal or during seasonal transitions.

Post-installation movement caused by temperature or humidity adjustment creates gaps between planks, buckling at seams, edge lifting, and adhesive failure. These problems appear days or weeks after installation and require costly remediation — including lifting and relaying sections of the floor.

The room should be at its normal operating temperature during acclimation — typically between 15°C and 30°C for most South African commercial environments. Do not acclimatise in extreme conditions — very cold unheated spaces in winter or unventilated spaces in summer heat.

No — the process requires time for the material to reach thermal and humidity equilibrium throughout its full thickness. Attempting to accelerate the process by heating the room does not reduce the required time and may cause uneven acclimation that creates installation problems.
